[comp.periphs] NEC 2352

hull@sunybcs.UUCP (04/05/87)

If you have experience with either of these drives, please send me a short note
that describes your general opinion about them. Please
include the date the drive was purchased and if it has
ever required repair. If it was a warranty repair, where was the
work performed and how long did it take?
Also, what controller and computer is the drive used with?

If you are also familiar with Fujitsu drives (the super eagle 2361,
the regular eagle, the 2333, and the swallow 2344), would you
consider the NEC drives to be a viable alternative?

The reason for this request is my dissatisfaction with the
performance of Fujitsu in fixing the Super Eagle HDA problems.
We own three Super Eagles all of which have HDAs that have
failed or are in the process of failing. They have had one of
these drives in California since the end of January to replace
an HDA. This is over two months for a job that takes at
most two hours to perform. At one point they offered to lend us
a regular Eagle for ONLY $1000. Are they ridiculous???
This was very insulting; to think that they would even ask us to pay
$1000 to remedy a problem created purely by a manufacturing defect.

The latest story from Fujitsu is that they will ship replacement HDAs
to their field service centers who will then be able to
do warranty repairs. This is somewhat better since at least
now when the drive that is currently dying finally fails,
it can be repaired in a few days rather than many months.
However, as of April 3, the local Fujitsu dealer had
still not received any HDAs, so this latest episode
is still unconfirmed.

Anyway, if you have any information on drives other than the NEC
models mentioned above, please send it to me.

Thanks,
Jon Hull

This is still true. At Oklahoma City University there are 2 supereagles and
one of them has been down for weeks waiting for an HDA. I should add that
this is one of the recent "safe" series so I suspect that there are more
problems down the road with these drives.
