[comp.periphs] ECHO ON displayed when not desired

Keywords:

One of the features in Microsoft's newly announced DOS 3.3 is the ability
to preface any line in a .BAT file with '@', which prevents that line
from being displayed when the command is executed. So by making the first
line of a .BAT file '@echo off', you'll never see anything you don't want
to see.

For a good description of other new features in DOS 3.3, see Vol. 6, #10
of PC Magazine (May 26, 1987) on page 48
