[comp.periphs] Hitachi DK815 anyone?

sid@linus.UUCP (Sid Stuart) (07/23/87)

I am looking at buying some Hitachi DK815 winchester disk drives
to use on Sun 3/180,280 disk servers. The Hitachi is a 1050 megabyte
drive (unformatted) that is about the same physical size as a 2361 supereagle.
It will work on the Xylogics 451 controller. The reason I like the
Hitachi is that I am getting it for around $10 a megabyte, while the
2361 is about $14. Has anyone had any experience with the drive
good or bad? I am told it has been shipping in the states for about
7 months, Japan for about a year.

Well, here at the University of New Mexico and at Los Alamos National Labs,
we have been using the DK815-5 (~600Megs unformatted) on out SUN's with few
problems. On our SUN 3/160, we have four (4) Hitachi's on a single 450
controller and have not seen significant problems. Another UNM machine,
SUN 2/120, also has four Hitachi's on one 450 controller and they have not
had any problems. One of the groups at LANL also uses DK815-5's on their
SUN's and as far as I know they have not had any problems.

Now something I should mention is that the Hitachi's which we (UNM/LANL)
are using have SNs around 1200. The ONLY problem we have had, and I
chock this up to the low SNs, is that one drive started to get a lot
of read/write errors whenever the head was being seeked from one end
of the disk to the other.

We are also using these drives on our hypercube nodes and we have had
no problems (as of yet :^) .

I agree, why buy an Eagle when you get so much more from an Hitachi.
Hope this helps.
