[comp.periphs] rugged tape drives

Just out of curiosity, can anyone think of a 9 track tape drive with these
characteristics?

o rugged and durable -- it wouldn't be in the machine room
o relatively simple to load
o runs off a sun3

HP recently introduced an autoloading drive that meets requirements 1 & 2,
and perhaps 3. Although the HP-hosted version (HP 7980A) has an IEEE-488
(HP-IB) interface, the drive is also available in OEM versions with either
Pertec or SCSI interfaces (HP 88780A). I'm not sure if it is sold in single
quantities to end users though. It would be about $20K. Contact your local
HP sales office for assistance.

The 7980/88780 is a totally new design (not OEM'd from someone else), and
does not require tapes in autoloading seals - just ordinary reels.

Regards, Hewlett-Packard
