[comp.periphs] 3rd party SCSI disks/tape for Sun-3/60?

earle@jplopto.uucp (Greg Earle) (08/31/87)

This is a rehashed topic, but with the base price of a 16" color Sun-3/60C
being under $10K ($9900), which translates to $6930 for those places lucky
enough to have 30% discounts, it's really time to start looking seriously
at this machine. The problem of course is that Sun is Not In The Disk Business.
Thus, to get the minimum level of functionality out of the machine as a
standalone, you have to get the 141 Mbyte SCSI/ESDI disk & 60 Mbyte 1/4" tape.
This lists for $6500 (/$4550 @ 30%); in other words, almost 65-70% of the cost
of the machine itself. Ouch.

Thus, has anyone compiled The Definitive List of 3rd party SCSI/ESDI disks &
tapes, which can be used in the 3/60? Preferably, those that are compatible
with the Sysgen SC4000 controller (& driver) so you don't have to `roll your
own'. I'm particularly interested in finding equivalent tape storage (60
Mbytes in QIC-24 format) at a lower price, and in finding either equivalent
disk at a lower price, or (much?) higher capacity disk at (around) the same
price. Like, say for instance a 300 Mbyte disk (formatted) & 60 Mbyte tape
combo for a cost in the $5K - $7K range, or 150 Mbyte disk & 60 Mbyte tape
for $5K or less (rough guess-timates here). Also, hopefully the disk's
specs. will put it in about the 141 Mbyte disk's ballpark (1.2 Mbytes/sec
data transfer rates, 23 msec ave. access). Thanks in advance,
