[comp.periphs] wyse y85 vs. dec vt220

kmcmilla@umn-d-ub.D.UMN.EDU (Ken McMillan) (10/15/87)

I have been asked to look into the wyse wy85 and dec vt220
terminals for our site. I know very little about either.
I would appreciate any info (coments, prices, problems, etc.)
that you might have.

Sorry if this has been covered before, if it has could someone
mail me the summary. As always Thanks in advance.

No hard data, just observations:

The vt220 is more expensive and has a superior display.

The Wyse-85 has a superior keyboard, user-programable function keys,
processes incomming characters (slightly) more rapidly, has a
tilt-swivel display base, and a slightly-expanded command set (erase
X characters from cursor, etc).

DEC just recently announced the vt320 which is superior to and *CHEAPER*
than the vt220. The most important difference is that the new one has a
higher resolution display (with larger character cell size, I believe it
is 12x15 while the 220 was 9x7 or something) and thus is easier on your
eyes. It also has several of these "extra-goodies" that other terminal
manufactors have added to their vt220 clones, although they may be a
different set of "extra-goodies" than the Wyse-85 provides. I've never
seen the Wyse, so I can't comment, I just wanted to say it is pointless
to look at vt220s anymore. However, I hear DEC will still cheerfully sell
you a vt220 for significantly more than a vt320 if you *really* want one :-)
