[comp.periphs] scsi info request

jjk@abvax.UUCP (John J. Kolber) (11/17/87)

HELP!! I need to become a scsi expert fast!!

I am a hardware type ( logic designer ) who recently has been
thrown into the world of peripherials due to budget reductions.

I am looking for books/articals/videos which will explain
the scsi software protocols/messages from a top down ( start at the
begining) type approach.

I have no problem with the electrical interface/timing but all
these registers, messages and pointers are as confusing as hell.

Any information will be greatly appreciated, and will help keep
my learning curve to a miminum.

				thanks in advance:

John,
Check out BYTE within the last year, I believe, Steve Ciarcia
discussed/built a SCSI controller. My BYTEs are still boxed up so
I can't give you the issue. That's about all that comes to mind
at this late hour.

You're asking for tutorial info. I can't really help you there, Rusty
Haddock's suggestion of the Byte article is probably a good one for that.
But, since you need to become an expert, and because you're a hardware type,
it may be most useful to go straight to the source:

	American National Standards Institute
	1430 Broadway
	New York, NY 10018

Ask for the SCSI ANSI X3.131-1986 spec. Cost is $20.

[This info is from a Mini-Micro Systems article, Feb 1987. The phone
number isn't included, but you might want to call them first to make sure
the price is still the same]

The 'official' SCSI standard can be obtained from:
	American National Standards Institute
	1430 Broadway
	New York, NY 10018

While the article was helpful, the product he sells to do SCSI development,
the SB180 board, has a small error. Byte by Byte data transfer works fine,
but DMA will not.

The ANSI phone number (sales) is (212) 642-4900. The price for X3.131-1986 is
$25 plus shipping and handling. SCSI tutorial info is also available from
Technology Forums (612) 934-1415 at considerably higher prices. The SCSI-2
draft standard (X3.131-198X) is available from Global Engineering Documents
(714) 540-9870. There have been quite a few articles in such publications as
Mini-Micro, EDN, Electronic Design, Byte, etc. over the last 4-5 years that
would make good tutorials.
