Has anyone heard anything about a software package from Datability Software Systems that allows VAX users to access printers connected to Ethernet-networked PCs and compatibles? Supposedly with this software installed on a PC, a VAX system manager can define a VAX queue that will print to a LAT terminal port that is a peripheral printer installed on a PC with Databilitys Ethernet Remote Access Facility. To VMS these printers appear to be connected through standard DECserver 200s. I'm not sure I understand exactly what is going on here though. Is there any benefit in this type of connection over a printer connected through a terminal server? If the user already has RAF then the costs would seem to benefit this set-up. But, what if the user doesn't have RAF. It would seem to me to be just as cheap to buy the terminal servers for printer connection. It wasn't clear from the article (Digital Review Nov 23 issue;pg.1),at least to me, exactly what the benefits of this package were. If anyone has any information on this or similar packages, or could help explain this please email to me. Thanks kmcmilla@ub.d.umn.edu ps.
