[comp.periphs] WORMs and LANs: A Question

[]

Has anyone first-hand experience setting up a WORM as a file system
on a LAN file server? A friend wants to set up a statistical research
lab with a large database stored on WORM cartridges, which can be
accessed by students at several workstations.

The specific WORM and LAN systems are negotiable. Most vendors I
talk to claim putting a WORM on a LAN is simple, but none seem to have
done it, nor do they know directly of anyone who has actually set up such
a network. The manufacturers seem less enthusiastic, and Novell flatly
stated that Advanced NetWare will not support WORMs or CD ROMs.

The latest release of Novell Netware will support CD-ROM drives as
additional system volumes (i.e. it can't be SYS:). There are also
3rd party products to do this. I just saw an add for CD-NET and
CD-SERVER from Meridian Data, Inc. (408)476-5858 in _CD-ROM Review_.
(sorry, by "latest release" I mean 2.1)
