[comp.periphs] Looking for recommendations on 15" dot matrix printer

jeff@drexel.UUCP (Jeff White) (07/06/88)

I'm looking for recommendations and opinions for a 15" dot matrix printer
to be connected to a PC. Below are a list of the features I would like:

1. 15", builtin, adjustable tractor feed.
2. parallel interface standard (optional serial interface wouldn't hurt).
3. not excessively noisy (no loud fans, please).
4. MOST IMPORTANT - a decent print quality at the draft mode. I've seen
outputs from Epsons and Okidata's, and the characters don't seem very
   tight.
5. Easily switchable between standard and compressed print. Front panel
switch would be nice. I've seen others that require changes to dip
switches or going through a setup menu, neither of which I like very much.
6. speed - average, I guess. I'd rather get a printer that rated at 120-150
CPS and had a nice print quality than one rated 200 or more and was
very course looking. The printer will most often be used for printing
out spreadsheets, so having to shift down to NLQ to get a decent output
is not acceptable (since NLQ speeds are usually 1/4-1/5 that of the
   rated speed).
7. A NLQ mode would be a plus. I don't know how often it would be used,
but for those times when a spreadsheet would become part of an official
document or letter, it would be useful to have.
8. brand - a real brand (not a Taiwan clone) is essential. I'm recommending
this printer to other people, and I want to make sure the company will
still be around if they have problems.
9. Price - I'm figuring it would run between $500-$800.

Thanks for any input you can provide.
