I would appreciate any suggestions for 80-column wide printers with
serial interfaces that will print at a true 120 cps without needing delays
for cr and lf (ff delay is okay). The printer must have a pin-feed paper
mechanism, and must be physically small.
Simple serial buffering in the printer will not solve the problem;
there could be several minutes of sustained 120 cps printing, which will
overflow most printer buffers. Because of firmware constraints on a
microprocessor board (serial printer port on Octagon SBS-1000) which drives
the printer, it is not possible to introduce software delays and/or implement
RS-232 flow control.
An AT&T 5310 printer works just fine, but its physical size presents
a problem.
After speaking with a local OKI distributor, I bought a Microline
182 which was claimed to be able to do the job. What a joke! The 182
can't even print at a sustained 30 cps without requiring cr/lf delays.
I don't need any fancy printer features like various font sizes
and graphics.
