[comp.periphs] Looking for info about the Shugart SA455 drive

Hello out there,

I'm making a shot in the dark that this is the right place
to put this, so if I'm wrong please accept the apologies. I have
been given two 5-1/4" floppy drives that I've been told can be
used in an IBM-PC. I have the standard Western Digital controller
card that came with the machine, but when I replace the single
existing full-height drive with these two new half-height ones, the
machine doesn't acknowledge their existence. Also, simply adding one
of the SA455s to the cable along with the existing drive results in the
machine only seeing the original drive (thus confirming that everything
else is still plugged in properly, etc.). There are two sets of pins
on top of the SA455s with jumpers on them; one indicates which drive
in the sequence it is (i.e. #1, #2, etc.), and the other serves some
undetermined purpose. I have tried fiddling with the jumpers in obvious
ways but to no avail.

SO, the question is: does anybody know what I might do, or
even perhaps have experience with these suckers (maybe even an ancient
manual... Nah, that would be too much) and know what I need to do to
get them working ? Shugart seems to have gone under sometime around 1982
and thus I have no hope of getting any official help.

Thanks greatly for any advice. I can be reached at
