[comp.periphs] Canon Engine/ Laser Jet information

lfm@fpssun.fps.com (Larry Meadows ) (04/14/89)

I'm looking for information on the original Canon engine (is it SX or
CX?), i.e. the one in the HP LaserJet/LaserJet+ or the Apple Laserwriter.
Specifically I would like documentation on the interface to the engine
itself, including connector pinout, timing, and programming information.
I have the HP service manual but it's not real helpful. What I want to
do is some hardware hacking on the printer.

If anyone has this information or a source please send me mail; the usenet
address tektronix!fpssun!lfm is probably most reliable. Also you can call
me at (503)245-3271.

I'm also interested in any information on the LaserJet print controller,
especially the font cartridge 50-pin pinout.

I'll also buy a used LaserJet+ or Laserwriter1 interface board if you have or
know of one for sale.

Thanks a bunch!
Larry Meadows

Gee, I'd like to get this info, too. So if anybody knows where
to get it, how about posting it here, instead of just mailing it
to the poster.

Yes, definitely.

To start out, if enough people make noises about it, I'll post (somehow...)
my schematic for the LaserJet font cartridges. I took one apart and traced
it out. It's basically just some EPROMs with a bit of interface logic.
(The reason I'm hesitating a bit is that getting it into machine-readable
form is a hassle, and having a spec for the cartridge connector would be
better -- you can't tell from the cartridge whether the slot has other
capabilities that a ROM cartridge doesn't use.)

Have you tried the service manual for the HP printer? I thought that
had some interfazce details.

It has just enough to tantalize you. The mechanical end is discussed
in great, nay excruciating :-), detail, but the electronics are barely
touched on. The controller board is treated as a black box.
