[comp.periphs] 3d digitizer references

apollo@ecf.toronto.edu (Vince Pugliese) (04/25/89)

i am looking for references that discuss digitizing
3d objects. ideally if one knows of an article, or
articles, that describe the construction of a 3d
digitizer i would like to hear about it.

                                thanks in advance

Here are a couple of survey papers on 3D sensing (often called range sensing).
Range sensors produce a `depth map' rather than in `intensity map'; I assume
that's what Vince is after.

Besl, P., ``Active Optical Range Imaging Sensors'', in Advances in Machine
Vision, J. Sanz (ed.), Springer-Verlag, 1989.

Besl's article is an overview of the different range sensing techniques
(time-of-flight, AM, FM, triangulation, Moire techniques, shape-from-focus,
etc.), and contains an extensive bibliography.

Here are two more surveys:

Jarvis, R., ``A Perspective on Range Finding Techniques for Computer Vision'',
IEEE Trans. PAMI, v5, n5, 9/83, 505-512.

Nitzan, D., ``Three-dimensional Vision Structure for Robot Applications'',
IEEE Trans. PAMI, v10, n3, 5/88, 291-309.

Also, there was a workshop on range image understanding here at MSU last
spring. The proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag later this year.
A summary of the workshop appears in the journal Machine Vision and
Applications, pp. 45-60, 1989.
