[comp.periphs] ESDI to SCSI controller information

I am interested in finding out what kinds of ESDI to SCSI controllers
are available.

I've got a situation where I would like to run several Maxtor XT-8760 ESDI
drives off a SCSI based DECstation 3100. Recently in this group I heard
mention of an Emulex MD21 controller which sounds like it could do what I
need. Are there other makes and models ? Can any of them run more
than 1 ESDI drive ? Performance is not a major concern, these disks will
be used mostly for archival type storage. What I need idealy, I guess,
would be a board that takes 4 ESDI drives and presents them as 1 large SCSI
unit ( 4 units would be ok ).

Any information on products, vendors, cost, etc. would be greatly
appreciated.

I think SCSI-2 stands a real chance of damaging the potential
success of IPI-3 in the marketplace. The full-up double-wide
double-fast SCSI-2 should be quite a bit faster than even the
exteneded IPI-3 interface, and the prospect of one basic
interface technology spanning the "cheap and dumb" to the
"smart and very fast" devices is quite compelling. I really
think Ciprico may have really been brilliant to make their 5.25"
RAID controller a SCSI-2 device.
