jpp@specialix.co.uk (John Pettitt) (08/15/89)
I am looking for papers or other published material on caching
strategys for disk controllers. I would also be interested to
hear from anybody researching this area.
All help comments, etc welcome.

However, not even being willing to pick up the referenced paper, especially something easy like ACM Transactions on Computer Systems, is going overboard on laziness. John, the address is your local library, or pick up any ACM TOCS to get the reprint address. Peter Chen pmchen@ernie.Berkeley.EDU

Perhaps not. :-( Most libraries in fact do not carry ACM Transactions. Perhaps the person who posted the original question was new to the computing world. Perhaps not. Most people, even computer types, do not know what the ACM is. In your finite wisdom, you failed to mention what the heck ACM or TOCS stands for. I doubt even the most informed librarian will respond to a request for the ACM TOCS. My best guest would be the "Association for Computing Machinery Table of Contents" or something. But then again, we're both university gurus. :-) If this information is so well known, why didn't you simple share it with the person rather than trying to embarrass him. I don't like broadcasting this sort of thing on the net, but you shared your obnoxious comments and thoughts so I thought I'd join the party. But next time peteR, don't assume everyone reads PCGCAP or has access to a large/university library. Oh yeah, PCGCA - Pete Chen's Guide to Computer Journal Acronyms

If your main objection is my acronym usage, I did give the full citation: >> ACM Transactions on Computer Systems, Vol. 3, No. 3, August 1985, pp. 161-203 which is the full name (i.e. easiest name under which to find it in the library, easier than Association for Computing Machinery Transactions on Computer Systems). (and later in the message:) >something easy like ACM Transactions on Computer Systems, is going If your main objection was that John might not have access to a large/university library (i.e. one without ACM Transactions on Computer Systems or an appropriate periodical index to find some articles in the first place), I didn't think of this possibility, though I doubt he looked. If your main objection is an inappropriate flame over the net (which I assume is what you're objecting to), I apologize. Pete
