I am looking for a 1/2-inch tape drive (1600 6250) that can be tied directly to an ethernet and accessed from a Unix box. Does anyone have information on, or experience with, such a device? What we need is access to 1/2-inch tape hardware after our current system departs. As we would like to move to a more distributed environment, we're wondering if it makes sense to plug the tape into to net rather than tie it to a particular CPU box. We don't anticipate the drive generating a lot of traffic and are attracted to the idea of a drive that is independently up on our net. Any and all opinions welcomed. Pointers to vendors making such a thing _very_ welcomed as well as alternative strategies. Tim Lynch, Manager Chemistry Research Computing Facility Cornell Univeristy
