Large (> 600 MB) ESDI disks are now available for under $3K (for example, from CDC and from Maxtor). I am looking for information from people who are successfully using such disks on the IBM RT running 4.3 BSD. Specifically, I am looking for the following: 1) Good and bad experiences regarding the reliability and performance of the disks. 2) Description of the parameters used to format the disks. Any problems in formatting the disks using the standard utilities provided by IBM. 3) Sources for these disks at low prices (for an academic institution). If there is interest, I will summarize the info I receive in comp.ibm.pc.rt. Yuval Tamir Internet: tamir@cs.ucla.edu UUCP: ...!{uunet,ucbvax,rutgers}!cs.ucla.edu!tamir

He has a Wren VI (780M) disk. The problem is that it is not supported by any of IBMs normal controllers because it is too fast, so he uses a prototype controller (HESDI I think). I suspect that many of the disks would have a similar problem with controller speed i.e. the regular FESDI controller would not handle them.
