[comp.periphs] IOMEGA 20-megabyte Bernoulli disks

dplatt@coherent.com (Dave Platt) (10/10/89)

I'm interested in the 20-megabyte Bernoulli-effect cartridge disks made
by IOMEGA. In particular, are they as reliable as the vendor says? Is
their real-world mean-time-between-failures closer to that of a hard
disk, or closer to that of standard floppies in heavy use? Can they be
trusted? Are the mechanisms themselves (drives, heads, etc.) reliable,
or prone to failure?

The reason I ask... I just bought a defunct Bering Totem Bernoulli drive
(board and drives made by IOMEGA). I bought it primarily for the case
and power supply... but if the Bernoulli disks are reliable and
effective, it might be worth some money to have the mechanism itself
repaired. It looks as if I have one working drive, one dead drive, and
a toasted digital board...

If anybody out there has purchased or used a drive based on the 20-meg
Bernoulli mechanism, I'd very much appreciate hearing about your
experiences. Please email; if there's sufficient interest I'll post a
summary.
