I need a scsi controller to install in a Zenith Z-248 which is for the most part an IBM AT clone. I am also looking to find some software to use with the card that I buy. I am looking for software that will let me "screw around" with various flavor scsi disks. I have seen cases where unix format programs would not format a drive but a PC or Mac program was able to go in and invoke a low level format, perform a media analyis, and re-label the drive which would then allow unix to talk to the disk. Ideally I would like to have source to the programs but could live without it. Free/cheap programs would be best but if it costs real money but does what I want then I can live with that. I have heard that the main players in marketing scsi controllers for PC's are adaptec and seagate. Anyone know of a good dealer who sells both and is willing to provide tech info on both so I can make an educated decision? Talking to the manufacturers would also be ok, although they usually are not interested in quantity one sales and, if they are, charge a lot more than a dealer. Oh yeah, it would also be nice if the card (and any requisite drivers) would work with a cd-rom player. thanks in advance, Tim Smith - Technical Consultant US mail:Sun Microsystems E-mail: 6797 Dorsey Road internet:tgsmith@east.sun.com Suite 4 uucp :sundc!tgsmith Baltimore, MD 21227 MaBell :(301)379-5000
