[comp.periphs] 300Mb ESDI for PS/2 Model 80

panisset@mcgill-vision.uucp (Jean-Francois Panisset) (02/23/90)

We have a PS/2 model 80 (xxxx80-071) with a 70Mb ESDI drive which is
hopelessly full. We have been looking around for an upgrade to something
like a 300Mb disk: even with the educational discount, IBM seems to think
that $7000 is not an obscenely inflated price to charge for such a beast :-(
Anyway, here are a few questions I am looking for answers to (please e-mail:
I will summarize to the net):

1-Who makes reliable 300Mb ESDI drives? I got interesting quotes on MiniScribe
and Micropolis, but it seems that both of these companies are now out of
business (I know for sure about MiniScribe, but Micropolis was news to me).
I heard that Priam is also out: who is left then?

2-Are there restrictions about installing a third-party ESDI drive in a PS/2
Model 80? I know the controller is ESDI, so that should not be a problem.
I see the biggest problem in getting proper mounting hardware, but at this
point we might be taking out the original 70Mb drive, so we could use its
mounting hardware for the new drive.

3-(Somewhat related to 2) Will I be able to use standard disk-formatting
software such as SpeedStor on the PS/2 ?

Thanks for any info anyone might provide...
