[comp.periphs] A tale of two little green boxes...

es2a+@andrew.cmu.edu (Eric Stuyvesant) (07/06/90)

Hello.

Does anyone out there know what either of the following is?

-> A green metal box, 35mm deep, 22mm wide, and 11 mm high, with the
     following LEDs on the front:

BA BB CA CB CC CD CE CF 1 2 PWR

and the following chrome switches below the LED array:
     1 | LOC | XMT | REM | (Where a | is a 2-position
    CH | TEST | REV | TEST | up/down | toggle switch
     2 + + + + +

On the back, there is a female DB9 labelled J2, a momentary pushbutton
switch labelled ANS MODE, and a female DB25 labelled J3.

There is room inside for 2 slots, the lower of which is occupied.
-> A similar green box of the same dimensions with the following LEDs
      in the faceplate:

TXD RXD RTS CTS DSR DTR RI CXR 1 2 PWR

And the following chrome switches below:

      1 | ALB | XMT | DLB |
     CH | | REV | |
      2 + OFF + OFF + OFF +

Inside, it looks similar to the first, but both slots are full. The top
slot has a female DB9 and a female DB25 coming out of the back. The
bottom slot has the same female DB9 (J2), Momentary switch (ANS MODE),
and female DB25 (J3) as in the first box.

Both boxes were manufactured by The Vadic Corp., and date from the early
seventies. My guess is that box #2 is some sort of serial line amplifier
or converter, or some such. I have no idea what #1 is, but given the general
construction similarity to #2, I can surmise it has something to do with
serial as well.

Any information is appreciated on the nature of these two boxes. Speculation
encouraged. E-mail please.

Thanks in advance.

Looks pretty much like a modem to me!
The
BA BB CA CB CC CD CE CF
refer to the RS232 names of the signals
TD RD RTS CTS DSR DTR RI DCD

The ANS MODE would probably toggle between oroginate and answer mode.

Hope this helps.
