[comp.periphs] formatting IDE drive

help...

I have heard that "IDE interface" disk drives are "just like ST-umpty
interface" in terms of low level formatting--that the same BIOS (and
controller command?) incantations can be used without losing IDE
performance or capability or smarts.

And I have heard just the opposite--that trying to use a standard
low level formatter program (i.e. SpeedStor) will foul up whatever the
IDE on-drive controller is so good at, and will result in yukko performance
(and other bad things.)

In particular, I am interested in the Conner (Connor?) 80MB drive
on the Conner IDE adapter on an ISA bus in a 386SX machine.

Can anyone provide some info?

Does anyone at Conner watch this group?

Does Conner have a BBS?
