[comp.periphs] High Speed Parallel interface for HP/Apollo DN10000

timv@ccad.uiowa.edu (Timothy VanFosson) (09/11/90)

We are looking for a high speed parallel interface for our DN10000
to allow it to connect to our Alliant FX/8 for an application
involving real-time simulation of mechanical systems. The application
will not require high bandwidth, but will require fast (sub-millisecond)
response. Our Alliant can support the Gould HSD interface. I've checked
the HP/Apollo Products Price Guide and can find no mention of any high
speed parallel interface (surprise! surprise!). Has anyone heard of a
third party device that would fit the bill, or perhaps, an unannounced
HP/Apollo product along these lines?

Please respond via e-mail and I'll summarize.

I am reposting this because of some problems I had with relaynews,
so I'm not sure the original got through. Forgive me if I'm wrong.

We are looking for a high speed parallel (or higher speed serial) interface
for the Apollo DN10000 (VME) that will allow us to communicate with our
Alliant FX/8, (presumably, such an interface would have to work on
the Alliant as well). Bandwidth is not critical(>200Kb/s is ok), but
latency must be minimized. The application is a real-time, mechanical
systems dynamics simulation coupled with real-time, realistic animation
of same. The dynamics would be run on the DN10000, with other host
functions carried out on the Alliant FX/8, which will communicate with a
high-end image generator. Sub-millisecond latency is preferred, as we
must maintain ~15 millisecond intervals for data transfer to the image
generator.

Essentially, what would we be looking for is something like a DR11 or
HSD interface.

If anyone has experience with such and interface, or has seen one
advertised, I would appreciate a pointer.

Thanks,
