[comp.periphs] ADAPTEC HD jumpers

mange@isy.liu.se (Magnus Hedner) (09/24/90)

I have an old hard disk, a BASF something of approx. 13 MB. It was delivered
with my old ABC-1600 (a swedish *NIX-computer), but since I don't use that
thing anymore I want to use the disk with my Macintosh PLUS. The controller
card for that disk was an old SASI-controller, so it is unuseable with the mac.

A friend of mine has lent me another controller card, which has labels saying
"ADAPTEC" on it. The problem is that I have no documentation for it, and
therefore I don't know how to set the jumpers. Does anybody know that, or has
someone made it cooperate with a mac? So far, I haven't seen it respond when
the mac tries to find SCSI-devices, but it seems to be on speaking terms with
the hard disk. BTW, I don't know the name of the interface between the con-
troller and the disk, but the contacts matched...

The software I've been using is "HD utility" and "SF&I 1.01". The HD utility
sometimes says "No devices found", and sometimes it says something about the
BSY signal not going inactive in time. The SF&I doesn`t even find the card.

A few facts about the controller card:
On the pcb, the following is printed:
    adaptec, inc.
    ACB 4000
    ASSY 400006-03
    REV-B

The CPU (a 8085) has the following label on it:
    ADAPTEC INC.
    ACB 4000
    400120 B16

The prom (a 2764) also has a label:
    ADAPTEC INC.
    400108-00 A
    (c) 1984

On a label on the solder side the number "8519" is printed.

There is a jumper field close to the contacts to the disk:

        T *
     PU * * R (where a "*" is a pin)
        S *

and another field with eight lines going to one port on the 8446 (memory and
parallel IO ic). The jumpers short-circuit to ground, and the other end is
pulled-up. The jumper field has these labels on the PCB:

     P * * O
     N * * M
     L * * K
     J * * I
     H * * G
     F * * E
     D * * C
     B * * A

That's all the information there is on it. My question is: How shall the
jumpers be installed, and what are they used for? And, most importent, is it
useable between the BASF HD and the Mac PLUS?

Thanks in advance!
