Has anyone fixed up a version of troff and/or TeX that when run would
start up a copy of itself on a lightly loaded remote system and use
IBIS to open files on the original system? This would seem to overcome
some of the inherent difficulties encountered when trying to round-up
input for (e.g.) troff and then off-loading the whole mess to a remote
system for processing.
