[comp.periphs] wanted, info on multi-gigabyte

jdb@arp.anu.edu.au (John Barlow) (01/08/91)

Hello. Hopefully this is the right group to ask.

I am looking at "on-line" disk requirements for a Connection Machine (CM-2),
Fujitsu vector processor (vp2000), and a Fujitsu Cellular Array Processor
(CAP, now called AP-1000). The users need to store large amounts of
data (to me, large amounts of data equate to several gigabytes per user,
for serious users). Given cost, we will probably have to buy a central
server and NFS mount it over the ethernet (pretty slow ??).

Of course we would like high speed (attached to the IPI interface or SMD
bus is my current definition of high speed), but we can live without it.
Write many would be best (we are looking at optical juke-boxes, write
once is pretty old these days). Epoch file server or similar is my current
thinking, but I'm open to suggestions - enlighten me.

I suppose if I had to put a figure on capacity, at least 50 gigabytes but
preferably more.

Thanks.
