In summary: it's a new set of PROMs for the controller board and a bitmap memory board. You get full page graphics, room for more fonts besides, Tek 4014 support, and some error handling odds and ends. > 3. Does this really do italics stock or is it just a myth? ... The LN03 will interpret the ANSI X3.64 command to select an italic font, IFF you've downloaded one, otherwise the printer will fallback by underlining a normal font. There are no built-in italic font files in the LN03 or LN03-Plus. Many LN03 optional font cartridges do provide italic font files.
