[comp.periphs] 8mm <-> DAT: reliability? ease of use?

carroll@ssc-vax (Jeff Carroll) (03/07/91)

We are reviewing our data storage strategy in the light of a
couple of years' experience with Exabyte 8mm drives. Toward that end I
would like to solicit comments from anyone who has experience with
embedding 8mm or DAT drives in their OEM systems (we build real-time
systems for internal use).

We are paricularly interested in hardware reliability (both in
terms of MTBF, and of the existence of undocumented error conditions) as
well as programmability, robustness, and general ease of use. Of particular
interest are comments from people who have used both types of drive.

Please email comments to carroll@ssc-vax.boeing.com. I do not intend
to redistribute this information.

(Does anyone know when products using the new Philips digital
compact cassette format are expected to hit the market?)
