The way I make sense of this is from the usual diagrams that show the
mainframe as a towering oracle over the lowly PCs that gather around its feet:

The usage is even more confused with more peer-to-peer communications taking
place.  I am betting that horizontal metaphors will take over as a result
(probably get/put).
