I have been trying to find information about game design along the lines of Malone's article. No one seems to have any good information but everyone is intrigued by the article citation. Me also, I've been walking around with it in my backpack for about 2 years. I read it often, it is interesting. Here it is: Toward a Theory of Intrinsically Motivating Instruction by Thomas W. Malone Cognitive Science 4 (333-369) (1981) --Thom Gillespie

I don't typically read cog-eng, but did so today on whim. I happen to have worked with Tom Malone for several years, as his student and also as research staff at MIT. Tom is a Professor (of the Full varietal, with an endowed chair and his own research center) at the Sloan School of Management at MIT. Anyway, the email address most likely to work is: malone@xv.mit.edu You could also try physical mail: Prof. Thomas Malone MIT Sloan School of Mgmt. Cambridge, MA 02139 If all else fails, his office phone number is (617) 253-6843, but remember he is a *very* busy man... As to the Intrinsically Motivating Instruction article, this was one of a couple of articles based on his dissertation (at Stanford, Psych Dept). I don't have my files handy, but I can provide references if there is sufficient demand. Replies via email please - I don't frequent this newgroup often... cheers, kg kgrant@oracle.com [if your mailer groks MX records] kgrant%oracle.com@apple.com [if your mailer doesn't grok MX records] oracle!kgrant [uucp]
