                           CALL FOR PROPOSALS

HUMAN FACTORS SOCIETY 35th ANNUAL MEETING
                     Computer Systems Technical Group

                        San Francisco, California
                           September 2-6, 1991

The Human Factors Society Annual Meeting provides an opportunity for the
exchange of information and ideas among people working in the field of human
factors and related areas. The Computers Systems Technical Group is the
largest technical group in the Human Factors Society. This group is concerned
with any of the human factors aspects of designing, developing, and using
interactive computer systems, including, for example:

  * Human-computer interface hardware issues (e.g., workstation design)
  * User interface software issues (e.g., dialog design)
  * Definition of computer system functions to support users
  * Social and organizational impacts of computer systems
  * User documentation, on-line help, and tutorials
  * Personnel selection, procedures, and training
  * Human factors aspects of the software development process itself

Recent Annual Meetings have included, for example, sessions on user interface
prototyping, adaptive systems, input devices, cognitive modeling, visual
information presentation, the psychology of programming, speech and writing,
hypermedia, expert assistance, and documentation development.

The Computer Systems Technical Group seeks proposals for lectures, work-in-
progress posters, symposia, panels, demonstrations, and workshops. A brief
description of each of these categories of proposals follows.

LECTURES (Submission deadline: Feb. 4, 1991)

Lecture presentations describe recent empirical, theoretical, or design work
on significant human factors topics. Papers based on lectures will be
published in the Proceedings. Lectures that include live or taped
demonstrations are particularly encouraged. Typically, a maximum of 20
minutes is allotted to each presentation. To submit a Lecture proposal,
include five copies of the following:

    - Completed Lecture Cover Sheet (see below)
    - 250-word abstract
    - 1000-word summary of the presentation

WORK-IN-PROGRESS POSTERS (Submission deadline: June 14, 1991)

Work-in-progress posters are intended for work that is completed after
the deadline for lecture proposals. This will be an interactive poster
session; authors are expected to present the material and answer questions.
Authors will be required to give their presentation once during the meeting
and are encouraged to be available at other times. Poster materials will be
on display and should be as self-explanatory as possible. Posters will not
appear in the Proceedings. To submit a Work in Progress Poster proposal,
include five copies of the following:

    - Completed Work in Progress Poster Cover Sheet (see below)
    - 250-word abstract
    - 1000-word summary of the poster

SYMPOSIA (Submission deadline: Feb. 4, 1991)

A symposium consists of several related presentations on the same topic. The
symposium should present a topic of sufficient scope and importance to allow
diverse or conflicting views on the topic. A symposium typically is allotted
a 90-minute session consisting of not more than four 20-minute presentations
and a 10-minute discussion. Each presenter in a symposium gives a paper that
is similar in format to a lecture presentation. Papers are published in the
Proceedings, and the symposium Chair is expected to write an abstract. To
submit a Symposium proposal, include five copies of the following:

    - Completed Symposium/Panel Cover Sheet (see below)
    - 1000-word summary of the symposium
    - 250-word abstract and title/author for EACH presentation
    - List of all participants, chair, and discussants, including addresses
      and phone numbers

PANELS (Submission deadline: Feb. 4, 1991)

A panel provides an opportunity for an exchange of views among panel members
and the audience on a topic of common interest. A panel is more informal than
a symposium and must be structured to offer a high degree of interaction.
Each panelist should speak between 5-10 minutes followed by an open discussion
period of at least 30 minutes. Abstracts written by each panelist will appear
in the Proceedings along with a panel abstract. To submit a Panel proposal,
include five copies of the following:

    - Completed Symposium/Panel Cover Sheet (see below)
    - 500-word summary of the panel describing objectives and importance
    - 250-word abstract written by EACH panelist
    - Title/author of each presentation, including a list of all participants,
chair, and discussants, including addresses and phone numbers

DEMONSTRATIONS (Submission deadline: Feb. 4, 1991)

Hands-on demonstrations may be used to give experience with new interface
technologies, to show before and after product designs, or any other purpose
for which this interactive format is appropriate. Abstracts of demonstrations
will be published in the Proceedings. Please note that demonstrations are
intended to be technical, not commercial or sales-oriented. Presenters will
be provided with table space and an easel. Macintosh and IBM PS-2 or AT
personal computers will be provided on request. Presenters will be scheduled
to give their demonstrations once during the meeting and may also use the demo
area as available. To submit a Demonstration proposal, include five copies of
the following:

    - Completed Demonstration Cover Sheet (see below)
    - 250-word abstract
    - 1000-word summary including objectives, description of subject matter,
      and possible applications
    - Provide photographs, Macintosh or IBM diskettes, or videotapes as
appropriate to convey the nature of the demo.

WORKSHOPS (Submission deadline: Feb. 4, 1991)

Workshops emphasize hands-on, how-to learning and are designed to provide
participants with usable applied skills. The organizer is responsible for
submitting the proposal and coordinating with any additional instructors.
Proposals may be submitted for either 3-hour or 6-hour workshops. An
honorarium of $500 will be granted to the organizer of each 3-hour workshop
and $1000 to the organizer of each 6-hour workshop. To submit a Workshop
proposal, please request a copy of the complete Call for Proposals package
from the Human Factors Society main office (see below).
