[comp.cog-eng] special issue of Memory and Cognition

usenet@bellcore.bellcore.com (Poster of News) (02/21/91)

In case you haven't seen it, I'd like to draw your attention to
a special issue of Memory and Cognition on "Applied Issues" that
I'm co-editing w/ Peggy Inton-Peterson. The general idea is to
try to generate some fruitful interaction between the applied and
research communities. Since many people working in the HCI area often
wear both hats, I thought that your insights could be particularly
valuable.

I think some useful examples of interactions might involve cases
where new areas/problems for research are discovered in an applied
setting, or cases where existing theories have to be significantly
extended for successful application. There are, of course, many other
examples of interesting and important links.

I encourage you to submit relevant work. The turn around time will
be quick, and I hope that there will be a larger than usual audience
for this issue. Feel free to pass this announcement along to other
who you think might be interested.

Thanks -
Sue

CALL FOR PAPERS

Memory & Cognition: Special Issue entitled "Memory and Cognition Applied"

Special Issue Editors:
             Susan Dumais (Bellcore)
             Margaret Jean Intons-Peterson (Indiana University)

             Associate Editors:
             James Chumbley (University of Massachusetts)
             Robert Proctor (Purdue University)

Papers relating to applied memory and cognition are invited for this special
issue of Memory & Cognition to be published in late 1991 or early 1992. The
special issue will focus on fruitful interactions between applied and basic
research in cognition. Research involving applications of cognitive
psychology to real world problems, as well as applied solutions to practical
problems which suggest interesting new research areas are of interest.

We encourage submission of papers on the following topics:
  - cognitive-based design of computer interfaces
  - cognitive problems observed in complex systems
  - educational applications of memory and cognition
  - complex decision making
  - computer or related aids to memory, problem solving, and decision making
  - medical or legal memory and reasoning
  - long-term retention of skills and knowledge
  - prospective memory

Please submit papers as soon as possible. Manuscripts should be submitted to
Susan Dumais, c/o Memory & Cognition, Department of Psychology, Indiana
University, Bloomington, Indiana 47405 before April 15, 1991 to be
considered for the special issue. Manuscripts will undergo the normal
