There was an excellent response to my query for references on adaptive user interfaces and knowledge acquisition. Many thanks to all these people. - April Gillam .............................................................................. From: Sanjiv K. Bhatia <sanjiv@hoss.unl.edu> Have you looked into the papers on Personal Construct Theory - especially useful for knowledge acquisition around which the tool Nexpert Object has been built. I have an extensive bibliography (in refer format) with abstracts available by anonymous ftp from fergvax.unl.edu (129.93.33.1). The file is called refer.bib in the public directory and contains quite a few papers on knowledge acquisition along with their abstracts. -- Sanjiv K. It is huge and quite helpful. - April .............................................................................. From: D.S.Riches@stl.stc.co.uk I was part of an Alvey project in the U.K. called Adaptive Intelligent Dialogues, which ran from 1985-1989. We produced a book entitled :- "Adaptive User Interfaces", Eds. D. Browne, P.Totterdell and M. Norman, Computers and People Series (Eds. B. Gaines and A. Monk), Academic Press, ISBN 0-12-137755-5 If I say so myself this is quite a nice book to read and includes both theory and implementation issues. From: Bill Hefley <weh@SEI.CMU.EDU> There's a very good book summarizing several years of English work on adaptive user interfaces that has just been published, with the same title. My copy is at home, so drop me mail if you want the complete citation. I've also recently sent a copy of my paper on architectures for adaptable human-machine interfaces and a draft of a newer paper on learning in complex systems through adaptable HCI to Dave Frostad. If you can't get a copy from him, please let me know and I'll send you a copy. This is work that is coming out of my dissertation efforts here at CMU, which are currently unfunded and looking for a sponsor. Regards, Bill Hefley Bill sent me a couple papers that look very interesting. Architecture for Adaptable Human-Machine Interfaces by William E. Hefley, in Ergonomics of Hybrid Automated Systems II, Eds. W. Karwowski & M. Rahimi, Elsevier Science Publ., 1990 The other paper is a draft, so you should ask him for a copy. - April .............................................................................. From: bkillam@ccels3.mitre.org (bill killam) I used to work with Bill Noah...is he still at Logicon? I think I have some early reports and papers on adaptive user interfaces and one of my favorite concepts - the adaptive database. It will take me some time to look through my old stuff to find it, so if you do not get the infromation you need from the other responses on the net, let me know and I will see what I can find. From: rgreen@umd5.umd.edu (Rebecca Green) I recently heard a lecture by Alfred Kobsa of the University of Saarbrucken on "A user modelling shell system to support flexible cooperative human-computer interaction," which is quite a propos your interest. The info sheet for the lecture included the following: "He has co-edited a comprehensive volume <User modelling in dialog systems> (1989), and he is the editor of the new journal <User modelling and user-adapted interaction>.
