                     CALL FOR PAPERS AND REFEREES

HAWAII INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SYSTEM SCIENCES - 25

                         SESSION ANNOUNCEMENT

COGNITION AND PROBLEM SOLVING IN USER INTERACTION

               POIPU BEACH, KAUAI - JANUARY 7-10, 1992

Description

The Software Track of HICSS-25 will contain a two-day mini-track focusing
on topics in user interface design. The presentations will provide a forum to
discuss advances in theory and practice that improve production, learning,
and use. Theoretical, conceptual, tutorial, or descriptive papers selected for
presentation will appear in the conference proceedings published by the
Computer Society of the IEEE. HICSS-25 is sponsored by the University of
Hawaii in cooperation with the ACM, the Computer Society, and the Pacific
Research Institute for Infor- mation Systems and Management (PRIISM).

Submissions are solicited for the COGNITIVE session, which will be
administered by the Session Chairs noted below.

Submissions are solicited in:

*   Acquisition of user models

* Interface specification, design and implementation.

* Methods for maximizing acquisition of programming skill.

* Models of human problem solving and their relation to software design.

* Empirical comparisons of existing interface technologies.

* Level of expertise or expert-novice differences with respect to use of
	operating systems and programming languages.

* Empirical results of teaching and using software design techniques.

* Aspects of programming language design that affect productivity,
	maintainability, and reliability.

* Mental models of operating systems and the implications for learning
	and design.

* Transfer of training and experience between systems.

* Evaluation of direct manipulation and multimedia systems.
