---------------------------for the line eater------------------------ (Is the above an example of superstitious behavior?) I have been using a 2400 baud modem from InComm. They advertise that the modem can be upgraded to MNP protocol later. It uses the Rockwell chip set, has Hayes codes, an extended command set, seems to work quite reliably once the following problem is fixed: the PS drops 10V across the 5V regulator, which emits alot of heat. The docs talk about this being characteristic of the state of the art (?). The modem at first worked for 15 minutes and then died when it got too hot. Our tech type added some resistors to drop the voltage before it got to the 5v regulator, thus making it work, and voiding the warranty. I also use a Paradyne FDX 2400, and I can find no difference in reliability between the two units; the InComm is a little easier to use. Cost was $279. They appear to be widely advertised at this price. If you buy one, burn it in for a while before throwing away your receipt...
