Is there any software for implementing MNP on a PC without any help from the modem. While I would be interested in knowing if any of the commercial terminal emulators do it, I am really more interested in the prospect of stuffing it into something like "cu" or "kermit". -- Ken Mandelberg | {akgua,sb1,gatech}!emory!km USENET Emory University | km@emory CSNET,BITNET Dept of Math and CS | km.emory@csnet-relay ARPANET Atlanta, Ga 30322 | Phone: (404) 727-7963

Microcom itself sold a terminal emulator called "ERA2" which supplied all the MNP smarts for their early Hayes-like internal modems for the PC and PCJr. It supported up to MNP level 3 and the MNP file-transfer protocol. From looking at the binary, it seemed to be written in compiled BASIC, though I could be wrong. It also used to check for a Microcom modem and barf if it didn't find one (a rudimentary form of copy protection.) I believe they eventually came out with a version that would work with any Hayes modem. I found it minimally useful, since there were so few systems which used MNP. A reliable MNP connection at 1200 baud was a bit jerky, and the only system which supported their MNP file transfer mode was their own RBBS system with MNP. There was talk of making this version RBBS publically available, but I'm not sure whether anything came of it or whether the source was available. -- Steve Dyer dyer@harvard.HARVARD.EDU dyer@spdcc.COM aka {linus,wanginst,bbnccv,harvard,ima,ihnp4}!spdcc!dyer
