[comp.dcom.modems] carrier loss on incoming calls query

paula@bcsaic.UUCP (02/11/87)

Greetings,

I have an ADC model MD-1202 modem. This is the one that DAK has been
selling as the "1200 Baud Smart Duck". It has worked fine for nearly a
year, except for one problem. If somebody tries to call me while I am
telecommunicating, the modem drops carrier and informs me that the phone
is ringing. ("Well thank you, but I was right in the middle of
downloading micro emacs. Couldn't you have waited for me to log off?")
Is this a bug in the modem, a bug in the phone company, or a "feature"?
I have telephone service through GTE. I have heard of problems with
call-waiting. As far as I know, I don't have that feature. At least
I'm not being billed for it. Do I need to tell the phone company that I
am using a modem?

If anybody has any wisdom to lay on me, please e-mail. This newsgroup
is way down in my .newsrc file. If the response warrants, I will
summarize later.

Thanks,
Paul
