The problem is caused not by the beep, but by the momentary loss of carrier when the second call comes in. It's true that you can disable call waiting in some parts of the country, but not others. If your modem can be set to disable hangup on loss of carrier, or if you can set a longer time delay for it, you may be able to live with the problem. Personally, I have an extra phone line.

That may work - but it'll piss off the long distance callers, and confuse some of your friends.
