I am new to this list, so please excuse me if I am repeating things that already have been said. (1) To the person who is having trouble with XMODEM on a VAX: why not use Kermit? It is designed for file transfer between dissimilar computers over a variety of types of async connections. Your network may not be passing 8-bit data and/or control characters through unaltered. Kermit will work in such an environment. (2) It is possible to disable the escape to command mode on Hayes modems (i.e., +++). It is done by setting a value greater than 127 into register S2, which holds the value of the escape character. This is documented in the manual. (3) Users of Hayes Smartmodem 2400s may want to check that their modem is at a reasonably high ROM level. The ATI command displays 24n, where n represents the ROM revision level. A value of 7 or greater is best. Very early modems had problems with excessive transmission errors, even at 1200 bps. Other problems were fixed too.
