This question hasn't been asked since I started reading this list several weeks ago. If it has been, sorry. Does anyone have any experience with the Signalman Lightning 1200/2400 baud internal modem? I plugged one of these into my AT clone running Micorport UNIX. After some of the usual gyrations of getting just the right collection of options, it started working. I made several successful uucp transfers (both incoming and outgoing). Then the modem quit working. If I powered the machine down and back up, the modem came back to life. I also tried it using kermit under UNIX, with similar success followed by permanent failure. Its failure mode was typified by not responding to the carrier tone, even though I could hear it over the speaker. So the modem wasn't getting "wedged" as some postings here often refer to. It was trying to answer the phone, or it would dial the number. The connection was simply not completing. I also am fairly sure I had the options correct, and I saved them to the non-volatile memory. I could also dump them and could find nothing incorrect. I sent the modem back to my dealer, and told him I liked the design, but thought this particular card had an overheating problem. Now, of course, I am worried that the next one I receive will exhibit the same problems. Although I did manage to talk to a knowledgable person at the manufacturer's plant, as soon as I said my software is uucp from UNIX, I could hear the click as the person on the other side mentally hung up. Does anyone have any experiences to share on this device, either from DOS or from UNIX? Thanks Chuck Collins cpc@ames-nas ...!pyramid!chkpt!cpc
