Here is a reply I received from a person at Columbia about my problem . . . 
apparently this has been hashed and rehashed about AT's on this net, but the
computers I was working on were just plain old vanilla PC's and their clones.

I have 2.29B that she mentions, but have not had a chance to try it yet . . .
WHY (you ask?), everyone's gone for spring break (including the faculty!).

Oh well . . .

2.29 did not work with internal modems but reportedly 2.29B will work with
Hayes and Hayes compatible full and half card internal modems.  I am not
sure about the Everex.  Why don't you download KER:MSTIBM.BOO and try it out.
