This 1200 baud, Hayes compatible modem is selling for $129 (on sale from $169) from DAK INdustries. Has anyone used this modem? How reliable and long-lasting is it? Can it be serviced? In short, is this modem recommended as an alternative to the Haves Smartmodem 1200?: Has anyone used this modem (ADC modem) with a Mac 512 and does it work well? Thanks in advance for your answers.

I bought one of these about a month ago while the advertised price was still $149, and was very pleased when I found out that I was only charged $129 from DAK. Even at $149 though, it is would be a great buy. For $129, you get a *fully* Hayes compatible modem AND $25 worth of CompuServe time. The "Smart Duck" as DAK calls it, is indeed a good alternative to a true Hayes, for only a fration of the price. As far as reliability, I've had no problems yet, and from listening to others on the net who have also purchased, they seem to be pleased as well with its performance. There was a brief discussion about this modem a few months ago in this newsgroup if I recall correctly.... Also, there are several dip switches that allow you to customize to your particular configuration. Serviceability: Well, DAK offers a 1 year warranty, and there is an extended warranty option you can buy for an additional $29.99 that'll give you an extra year. I use this on an PC compatible running Procomm 2.4.2 without any problems or complaints. If anyone has additional questions, just send e-mail, I'd be glad to answer any questions. --- David M. Yes, I own one of the DAK ADC modems and it works very well. I've hooked it up to my PDP-11 and have run it of a VT100. For the price it can't be beat and you'd swear it's a Hayes in disguise. Warren
