Press release, 4/23/87:

	WASHINGTON, D. C. -- AT&T today proposed a new DATAPHONE(tm) Digital
Service optional feature called Secondary Channel that will give its data
communications customers improved network-management and diagnostic
capabilities.
In a tariff filing with the Federal Communications Commission, AT&T
said it planned to begin offering Secondary Channel on many interstate DDS
circuits starting June 1.
Secondary Channel allows customers to use transmission paths that
are independent of primary DDS data paths to transmit diagnostic information
and perform maintenance functions while their DDS circuits remain in
operation.
An alternative use customers may make of Secondary Channel is
encrypting their data as an additional security precaution.
Customers may use a variety of premises equipment to perform
network-management functions with the Secondary Channel option, including
AT&T DATAPHONE II Level IV diagnostic system that may be used in conjunction
with DATAPHONE II 2700 Series Data Service Units.
Secondary Channel may be available at capacities of 2.4, 4.8, and
9.6 kilobits per second in all circuit configurations, and in two-point
configurations only for 56 Kbps DDS circuits.
AT&T said it can extend the Secondary Channel option to the local
channels of interstate DDS circuits because several of the nation's local
telephone companies are making it available in their interstate access
tariffs. Pricing for the option will be based on rates in the access
tariffs.
Secondary Channel will be available for interstate DDS circuits that
terminate in all BellSouth, Southwestern Bell, and US West regional holding
company territories. Additionally, Pacific Telesis has made it available in
California, and Ameritech has made it available in Indiana and Michigan.
