I have gotton quite a number of calls asking about where I saw an add for a US ROBOTICS 2400 BPS modem. The add was in the april 20 1987 issure of infor world, page 74. The advertiser is called The On-Line STore. The number is (805)656-3741, That is ventura, CA. The ad says 2400 baud us robotics modem $179. I called and he does have them and wants to sell them but they are internal as some of you suspected. I need an external to be able to move it between computers easily. He said he had a modem called CTS DATA COMM EXTERNAL 2400 BPS at 239 bucks. Tried to sell me on that one. Anyone ever heard of that one? I noticed some ads don't say what the brand name of the modem is. Yet there are some that are advertising 2400 bps modems external at prices of 200 and under (or slightly over) are there any that I should be looking out for? (ie bad brands)? thanks again

Unfortunately, a lot of hobby-grade modems (this includes the Hayes, so I'm not sure WHY it should be better than the USR, though USR is at the bottom of my list) don't provide full EIA handshaking, or deal with it like the commercial grade modems do. On top of that, a lot of people plug in a convenient cable, and assume everything is ok if it works most of the time. If you don't match your control lines, and your software is inadequate, the best modem in the world won't give satisfactory performance.
