I've seen "trellis coding" mentioned in connection with V.32 modems. Is this a modulation scheme, error correcting code, or what? How does it work? Don Speck speck@vlsi.caltech.edu {seismo,rutgers,ames}!cit-vax!speck

Basically, trellis coding is a method of coding without bandwidth expansion so that you don't lose, by admitting more noise, while you're trying to gain by correcting errors. A pair of good tutorial articles by Ungerbock can be found in the February, 1987, issue of IEEE Communciations magazine. He is the "father" of trellis coding. -- Brint Cooper -- Brint Cooper
