[comp.dcom.modems] What is trellis coding?

mangler@cit-vax.Caltech.Edu (System Mangler) (06/06/87)

I've seen "trellis coding" mentioned in connection with V.32 modems.
Is this a modulation scheme, error correcting code, or what?
How does it work?

Basically, trellis coding is a method of coding without bandwidth
expansion so that you don't lose, by admitting more noise, while you're
trying to gain by correcting errors.

A pair of good tutorial articles by Ungerbock can be found in the
February, 1987, issue of IEEE Communciations magazine. He is the
"father" of trellis coding.
