Response to my inquiry on cheap 2400 baud modems has been sparse, but here is all the information I've recieved. My original posting: ===================================================================== Does anyone have any experience with the following low cost 2400 baud external modems? Desktalk II 2400 $199, USA Flex (800) 872-3539 Features: Hayes clone, 5 year warranty, help screen, 11 LEDs, plastic case, 30 day money back guarantee. CEI Super Modem 2400 $199.95, Communications Electronics Inc. (800) USA-DISK Features: Hayes clone, 5 year warranty, help screen, 11 LEDs, plastic case, non-volatile RAM, software volume control. Expert 24e $199, Advanced Computer Technology (800) 654-6464 Features: Hayes clone, 2 year warranty, help screen, LEDs ?, automatic data/voice switch, volume control, stores two 33 digit phone numbers, aluminum (I think) case. The Desktalk and Super Modem appear to be the same critter with different names, the pictures look the same except for the name on the front panel. The Expert makes no mention of LEDs, but it appears to have an aluminum case, while the other two look like plastic. For $200 I'm really tempted to move up to 2400 baud, but I'd like to know if anyone can make a recommendation on one of these modems. ==================================================================== The posting: ==================================================================== In article <304@esunix.UUCP> blgardne@esunix.UUCP (Blaine Gardner) writes: >Does anyone have any experience with the following low cost 2400 baud >external modems? > >Desktalk II 2400 $199, USA Flex (800) 872-3539 > Features: Hayes clone, 5 year warranty, help screen, 11 LEDs, > plastic case, 30 day money back guarantee. We use the Desktalk II 2400 baud external modem, and have not had a single problem with it. We modified our uucp files to show that a hayes modem was in use at 2400 baud, and it worked perfectly. No hacks, etc. 100% Hayes compatibility + 5 year warranty are what sold us. Regards, Brian K. I have been very impressed with the unit. It support the storing of setting in NVR and also has the Hayes type dip switches if you prefer to use those. It also supports DTR properly, which makes it suitable for running a BBS off of. It has proven to be more reliable at 1200 baud then my Volks 12 (by reliable I mean I get less instances of phone noise over the same connection that I call frequently). The 2400 baud has also worked reliably over the connection I have called at 2400 baud, but unfortantly I do not have many places yet that I call that support it. Brian Waters ======================================================================= So we have two recommendations for the Desktalk II, and no votes against it. For $200 and a 30 day money back guarantee, I'll probably get the Desktalk II. -- Blaine Gardner @ Evans & Sutherland UUCP Address: {ihnp4,decvax}!decwrl!esunix!blgardne Alternate: {ihnp4,seismo}!utah-cs!utah-gr!uplherc!esunix!blgardne

I've been using a Mitac 2400BD modem (that IS the model number, as far as I can tell) for a few days, and have had no troubles with it. $199 from 1st Street computers in Santa Clara. That is for an EXTERNAL 2400 baud (and 1200 and 300, too) modem, which I "had" to get, as I don't have an IBM-compatible, so internal modems do me no good. Then again, I've only had it for under a week... if any problems DO come up, I will post about them! :-) _ _ _ Marc Kriguer / \/ \/ \ / / / __ ___ __ BITNET: REMARCK@UCLASSCF / / / / \ / / / ARPA: marc@pic.ucla.edu / / / \__/\_/ \_/\__/ UUCP: {backbones}!ucla-cs!pic.ucla.edu!marc
