Intel has in its catalog the 89024, a two-chip set that implements a 2400 bps Hayes compatible modem. All you need to add is a power supply, the DAA for phone line interface, an EEPROM to remember the parameters, and a few other random components. I'd think that a modem built from this set should be quite small and cheap. Has anybody built a modem around this chip set, and if so, how is it? -- John R.
