[comp.dcom.modems] Trailblazer & 80286

asp@puck.UUCP (Andy Puchrik) (10/30/87)

Before I order my Telebit Trailblazer is anyone using one with
an 80286 unix system? I'm running Microport on an 8MHz clone. Can the
Microport or Xenix drivers support uucp at 9600 baud?

I also am contemplating purchase of a trail blazer modem. I have
heard good things about them in other postings as far as UUCP. But
how are they for interactive use ? Can I use VI on a remote terminal
at 9600 baud ? I know that some earlier high speed modems had delays
because they were too oriented towards large packets rather than a
couple of charaters at a time.

Early versions of Microport will "double panic" if you run high speed
connections. How frequently this happens is machine dependent. John
Sully at mport tells me that this is fixed in the the latest version,
and I will report further when we get it. If you are running any version
shipped before Nov 1987 you will probably have problems.

I run Xenix 2.1.3 on an AT, and can average about 7800 bps over two
concurrent 9600 baud uucp connections (to two machines, of course). I
can get about 9300 bps out one port and in the other using zmodem.

Your milage may vary... based on experience with two machines here and
numerous net postings in other groups.
