mail reply bounced, seemed to be of general interest Re: Zoom 2400HC I have four of them sitting in the store where I work. Zoom telphonics has been around since the late 70's ('77 I think). The modem (2400HC) is a half-card with built in speaker, externally accessible volume control, extern. speaker jack, 2 phone line connectors. It comes with ProComm telecommunication software. I had me techie look at one tonight and he admits (much to his chagrin) that it is well built physically. He is a dedicated believer in MultiTech modems because of their ability to handle noisy lines well (i.e. their robustness). That is something we have not been able to test on these modems, unfortunately, and no magazine has done a comprehensive review of them since they came out a month ago. If you are looking for an inexpensive 2400bps modem, however, I would have no wualms about recommending them. The company does make a full length 2400bps modem that is very robust, but priced at over $250. Last I talked to Zoom, they were talking about a week and a half lead time before shipping because the modems are so popular. Re: Practical Peripherals 2400 internal and external The only other modem that I have found that competes on a price basis is the Practical Periph. 2400 internal. I have found that it drops the first couple of characters on most lines in an 8MHz 0ws PC-XT clone, however (Kaypro running Procomm or Kermit 2.29). I called Pract. Periph. and they sent me a EPROM upgrade that they said would cure it, but it was apparently for the stand alone modem and didn't help. They second one they sent was also for the stand alone modem and I haven't tried it. I would look pretty silly going to the customer's for a second chip that does no better then the first. I have no connection with either Zoom Telephonics or Practical Peripherals other than having sold some of their modems. I own a Practical Peripherals 2400bps external, but will soon be upgrading to a MultiTech 2400bps internal with MNP level 5, which none of these other modems have.
